Pages Read Challenge

Well, I've been thinking about a few challenge ideas for a couple days now. One of them is a challenge I've done in 2006: the Pages Read Challenge!

The rules for this challenge are simple: First, you choose on a certain number of pages you want to read in 2009. And then you must read! And you must keep track of how many pages you are reading. Update your journal entry every week, every month or whatever works for you. Don't forget to tell us how many pages you hope to read and we'll all keep our fingers crossed that you reach that goal.

When?
The challenge will start January 1, 2009 and end December 31, 2009.

How?
List all the books and other stuff you read with the pages and add up the pages as you go. If it's an e-book, please check Amazon or B&N for the page number. To get the number of pages for each book, just check out the last page with text from the book and take the number written on there. Just ignore all the blank pages throughout the book. This is, after all, for fun, not to stress about counting pages ;)

To sign up, please leave a comment here with a link to your blog post.

So, my goal for 2009 will be 20,000 pages!

EDIT:
As I reached 20,000+ pages with Yasushi Inoue's Memoirs of the Priest Honkaku, I dare say I completed this challenge.

The participants are:
1) Kathrin - 20,000
2) Sue Fitz -
3) Lindy - 100,000
4) Judy (Intergalactic Bookworm) - 20,000
5) Sherrie - 50,000
6) Patty - 50,000
7) Rowena
8) Kisha - 45,000
9) Aerin - 15,000
10) Yooperchick - 30,000
11) Kris@Bookheart - 10,000
12) Challengingthebookworm - 50,000
13) Tracee
14) Kim - 25,000
15) Matthew - 15,000
16) Book Dragon - 80,000
17) DeSeRtRoSe - 10,000
18) Jan in Edmonds - 20,000
19) Kristi - 30,000
20) Lindy (Grilsgood)
21) Sandra - 40,000
22) Scribacchina - 15,000

I am still figuring out how to do things to and with my blog. Here is where I will keep track of my pages:
http://weavinglibrarian.blogspot.com/2008/12/blog-post.html

I hope my assumptions about pages for Kindle reading and talking books is acceptable:
I will be counting the pages that I read on talking books and my Kindle by using the page count for the original edition of the book.

Thanks again, Patty

@ Sue: Great you'll join in! I also think it is so much fun. I haven't counted pages for a while, so it'll be fun to see how I'll do!

@ Grilsgood: Glad you're in :) Sure you can read 20,000! It's not that difficult if you have the time to read at hand!

@ Judy: Great you're in! Thanks for letting me know about how to make buttons! I've never tried to do one, but maybe...? Can I get back to you if I have some questions?

@ Sherrie: Welcome and have fun tackling those 20,000!

@ Patty: Don't worry about blogging etc. If you hadn't posted the link, I'd just have searched your blog myself or linked to your blog. instead of to the post. Glad you'll try it with us - and yes, the Kindle pages count is okay.

Wow this sounds like such a fun way to keep track of all the books I read in 2009, count me in! Thanks for hosting this!

I'm in =o) here is the link to where I'll keep track, as soon as I figure out how I'm going to do it. I have a very lofty goal of 45000 pages.

I don't really have a goal, since I've never counted pages before. I'll be happy to make it past 15,000.

Sounds like fun! I'm going for the lofty goal of 30,000 words this year. Wish me luck!

@ Rowena, Kisha, Aerin, Yooperchick & Kris@Bookheart: Welcome to the challenge! :)

I'm in for 50,000. My personal goal is 200 books this year, so I figure 250 pages on average sounded like a nice round number.

I'll be keeping track of the total number of pages on the first post.

@ challengingthebookworm: Glad you'll join in :)

@ Judy: Thanks for that, Judy! I'm sorry, but the last post I see on your blog is one from early December... No button there.

I'm going to get a little anal here....how do we count? What if the book starts on page 7? What if every chapter starts on the right and there are blank pages? What if we read an anthology so title pages and stuff are in the middle? Should I just go by the number of pages listed at amazon?

I read a lot of ebooks that don't have "pages" because there is no print copy so what is the average number of words on a page?

Unknown said...

@ Book Dragon: I realize I could have been a bit more specific, sorry :) I've answered all your questions in the original post that I edited.
To be honest, I don't have a clue what's the average number of words on a page. I counted a random page in a paperback I had next to me and came to close to 300 words, though.
I hope this helps. If more questions pop up, let me know!

When I started this, I had no idea how many pages a montyh I read. Now I find that it is probably 8,000 a month, so for the year I am trying for 100,000. Lindy/CT

Unknown said...

Consider it done, Matthew! Welcome :-)

Lindy, that's amazing! I'll change your goal.

Book Dragon said...

Thank you for counting! I can get a word count for most of my ebooks and just use your 300.

I've started a post on my blog.

crossing fingers that the link worked....

3100 words for January - not a bad start!

Unknown said...

Aerin, great start!

Anonymous said...

Is it too late to sign up? And may I count the pages I read in January, 2009? And what about kids books that aren't numbered. Do they count?

Thanks Kathrin for hosting a challenging challenge!

Unknown said...

@ Jan: Of course you can still join in :-)
What kids books do you mean?

Jan in Edmonds said...

These are books that have no page numbers on their pages and are mostly pictures. If these don't count -- it's ok. Just trying to maximize the count.

For example, A-Z by Matthew Van Fleet. If you go the library, either on line or for real you'll see what I'm talking about. The description will say something like unnumbred.

Thanks.

I've finally made the commitment to do this challenge, too ;o). A little late, but...

You can find my post about it here

Jan in Edmonds said...

Thanks Book Dragon. I'll be shooting for 20,000 pages.

I'd love to do this. I have never kept track of my pages read so I will have to guess at a goal. Perhaps 40,000 pgs. I'll come back with a link to my post. Thank you.

Unknown said...

@ Jan in Edmonds: Thanks for the clarification, Jan! I'd rather you wouldn't count those books then. If there are more pics than words. If this changes something about the goal you want to set for yourself, please let me know and I'll change it. Changes to your goals can be made up until October 1st, btw!

Unknown said...

@ Book Dragon: Feel free to up your goal if you want to! As I mentioned before, goals can be changes until October 1st :-)

Unknown said...

@ Jan in Edmonds: I just added your goal!

@ Lindy & Sandra: I added your links :-) Welcome!

Hi,

I'm way late finding out about this challenge, but I would love to try to get to 20,000. I always keep track of how many pages I read each year, I am currently at 8,209. Last year I managed just over 15,000 and was wanting to beat it this year. Thanks for a great challenge idea.
